Function Health FDA-Cleared 22-Minute MRI
Function Health
This MRI move turns Function from a lab subscription into a consumer diagnostics bundle, and the 22 minute scan is what makes the bundle economically workable. A shorter protocol means more scans per machine, lower staffing cost per appointment, and a price that drops from Ezra’s prior $1,495 to $499 after the May 5, 2025 acquisition. That lets Function sell imaging as a mainstream add on instead of a luxury upsell, while still keeping the service lightweight with a post scan Zoom review rather than ongoing care.1 2 3 4
- Ezra built the MRI product around FDA cleared AI called Ezra Flash. Ezra announced in June 2023 that the software had 510(k) clearance, and Function said after acquiring Ezra that the scan can take as little as 22 minutes. In practice, the technology is valuable because MRI capacity is constrained by machine time more than by consumer demand.2 3 4
- The strategic point is less about replacing traditional diagnostic imaging and more about widening Function’s top of funnel. Function already sold a $499 annual blood testing membership and had reached a $100M revenue run rate by February 2025 with about 200,000 subscribers. A $499 MRI gives the same customer another cash pay purchase without adding the regulatory complexity of prescribing treatment.1 5
- This also shifts Function closer to companies like Prenuvo in product surface area, but with a different go to market. Instead of leading with an expensive standalone scan, Function can cross sell MRI into an existing member base that already uses Quest based lab testing and comes back repeatedly for new health data. That makes imaging part of a recurring consumer health account, not a one time event.1 5
Going forward, the key advantage is not simply cheaper imaging, it is a larger stack of health data under one consumer brand. If Function keeps adding cash pay diagnostics like MRI and CT while avoiding full service clinical care, it can increase revenue per member and make the membership harder to replace with a single lab test, scan, or wearable product.1 4 5
