Betterment as Employer and Advisor Backend

Betterment’s SMB and advisor products matter because they turn a consumer robo advisor into infrastructure that other businesses can resell under their own relationships. In practice, an employer uses Betterment to give workers a 401(k), and an advisor uses Betterment’s automated portfolios and account opening flow to serve clients without building that software stack from scratch. That widens distribution beyond direct to consumer marketing, where robo advisors have become expensive and crowded.1 2 3 4

• On the SMB side, Betterment’s 401(k) product is sold to employers as software, not just an investment account. Digital 401(k) players like Betterment, Guideline, Human Interest, and Vestwell replaced paper forms and manual onboarding with online portals that sync employee and payroll data from systems like Gusto and QuickBooks.1 3
• On the advisor side, Betterment is giving RIAs a low labor way to manage smaller accounts and retirement plans. Its Advisor Solutions business added an all digital Solo 401(k) in February 2025, extending the same recordkeeping system used in Betterment at Work to independent advisors and self employed clients.3 5
• This also positions Betterment against specialist retirement platforms. Guideline reached about $100M ARR in 2023 and Human Interest passed $100M ARR in June 2024, showing how valuable employer distribution can be. For Betterment, workplace and advisor channels create a path to gather assets without relying only on costly consumer acquisition.1 4 6

The next step is deeper bundling with payroll platforms, banks, and advisory firms. As retirement, cash management, and automated investing get packaged together, the winners will be the firms that become the default backend for someone else’s customer relationship, not just the app a consumer downloads on their own.1 2 3 4
