The real contest is over who becomes the operating system for conservation genetics. Colossal has more capital and a broader species roadmap than any single peer, but the scarce inputs are not customers in a normal market. They are preserved cell lines, field access, elite reproductive biologists, genome engineers, and the trust of zoos, agencies, and conservation groups that decide whose methods become standard practice.

Revive & Restore funds proof of concept work, backs more than 60 conservation biotechnology projects, and positions itself as the group defining the toolkit for biodiversity rescue. That gives it influence over donors, researchers, and agency relationships, even without Colossal scale.
  • Biobanks compete because whoever controls the samples controls the starting material. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance says its Frozen Zoo stores living cells and gametes from about 1,300 species, and in February 2026 partnered with Illumina to sequence up to 4,000 samples. That creates an alternative specimen and sequencing hub outside Colossal.
  • Academic programs and gene editing companies compete mostly for people and technical legitimacy. Conservation cloning and assisted reproduction in species like the black footed ferret are already embedded in public wildlife programs, while CRISPR and gene editing companies openly describe intense competition for scientific talent from universities, research institutes, and peer biotech firms.

The next phase is a race to bundle samples, sequencing, embryo work, and regulatory trust into repeatable conservation programs. If Colossal keeps turning de extinction tools into infrastructure for living species, competition will shift from headline species projects to long term control of the workflows that zoos, governments, and nonprofits use to manage biodiversity.
