Rippling's Compliance Data Moat

Diving deeper into

Rippling

Company Report
Rippling competes with dedicated compliance platforms such as Vanta and Drata without requiring customers to connect a separate data layer.

This is a data moat argument, not just a feature launch. Rippling can turn compliance into a byproduct of running payroll, identity, devices, and training in one system, so a customer does not need to wire up dozens of separate integrations before seeing value. That changes the buying motion from adding a new compliance hub to simply switching on another module inside the existing workforce stack.1 2 3 4

  • Vanta and Drata are built around integrations as the product starting point. Their platforms gather audit evidence by connecting into cloud, identity, ticketing, and HR systems across a customer stack. That works well for heterogeneous environments, but it means implementation starts with mapping and maintaining a separate evidence layer.5 6 7
  • Rippling starts from first party operational data it already owns. If employee onboarding, device management, app access, and security training already run in Rippling, then many SOC 2 checks can be observed directly from the source system rather than imported from outside tools. That makes compliance feel more like a native workflow than a parallel project.1 2
  • The market is large enough that dedicated players are still much bigger pure plays today. Vanta reached an estimated $300M ARR by April 2026, while Drata was at about $98M ARR in January 2025. Rippling is not trying to out integrate them on day one. It is using bundle economics to make compliance another reason to standardize on its broader HR and IT stack.3 4 8 9

The next step is broader framework coverage and deeper enterprise controls. If Rippling extends this model from SOC 2 into ISO 27001, HIPAA, and AI governance, compliance stops being a standalone software category for many mid market customers and becomes one more surface where the system of record absorbs adjacent point solutions.1 3
