AlphaSense threatens FactSet Excel dominance

Diving deeper into

AlphaSense

Company Report
AlphaSense's acquisition of Carousel directly challenges this advantage by bringing AI-native Excel modeling into its platform

This deal matters because it moves AlphaSense from being a place analysts read information to a place they build the actual model that drives the investment memo. Carousel adds an AI assistant inside Excel that can build, edit, and extend a workbook in plain language, while AlphaSense already had 4,500 Canalyst models plus structured financial data, comps, estimates, deals, and funding data. That starts to erode FactSet’s biggest day to day hold on bankers, which is living inside Excel.1 2 3 4 5

  • FactSet’s edge has long been workflow depth inside Microsoft Office, not just raw data. Its Excel and PowerPoint integrations are built for linked tables, templates, pitch books, and recurring model updates, which is why bankers keep it open while building client materials.6 7 8
  • AlphaSense is now assembling the same workflow from the other direction. Search and document discovery came first, then Tegus added expert calls and Canalyst models, then Financial Data added company financials and transaction datasets, and Carousel puts model creation directly inside the spreadsheet.2 4 5 9
  • The practical change is that an analyst can move from finding a datapoint to dropping it into a live model without switching tools. AlphaSense for Excel can update an existing workbook, pull platform data into cells, and extract figures from documents, which compresses the manual copy and paste work that used to favor FactSet.3 10 11

The next battleground is ownership of the full analyst desktop. If AlphaSense keeps tying search, proprietary content, structured data, and in workbook AI together, it can win seats that once went to FactSet by default, especially in banking and buy side teams that care more about modeling speed than terminal style market data.1 3 6 9
