ClickUp pivots to docs and agents
Notion
ClickUp’s move into docs and knowledge shows that project management alone is no longer enough, the winning product now has to hold the work, the discussion around the work, and the AI that acts on both. By November 2025, ClickUp 4.0 had added Docs adjacent features like enterprise search from Qatalog, sidebar AI through Brain, proactive agents in chat, and SyncUps with notes and transcription. The May 2026 layoff then showed how aggressively it intended to rebuild the company around that AI heavy model rather than just ship a few assistant features.1 2 3 4 5
- ClickUp had already been pursuing an all in one strategy before 4.0, bundling tasks, docs, chat, goals, whiteboards, time tracking, and search into one per seat product. The 4.0 release was the point where that bundle became a knowledge and agent system, not just a project tracker with extra tabs.1 6 7
- The direct overlap with Notion is concrete. Both want to be the place where a team writes, stores context, and lets AI search and act on that context. The difference is starting point. Notion expanded outward from docs and databases into agents, while ClickUp expanded inward from task workflows into docs, chat, search, and AI execution.1 3 6 7
- The 22% workforce cut matters because it makes the strategy legible. Management framed the reduction as part of replacing internal work with AI agents, after introducing thousands of internal agents and pushing Brain harder across the product. That suggests future competition will be shaped as much by operating efficiency and speed of AI adoption as by feature quality.2 4 5
Going forward, productivity suites will keep collapsing into a smaller number of context rich hubs. ClickUp is betting that multiplayer work still needs tasks, approvals, docs, and governance wrapped around AI. Notion is betting on a similar destination from the opposite direction. The next phase of competition is less about who has a better document editor, and more about who becomes the default operating layer for human and agent work.3 6 7
