Brex Becoming Company's Finance OS

Diving deeper into

Brex

Company Report
Brex is expanding horizontally by eating into more of its customers' financial stack

Brex is trying to become the system a finance team opens all day, not just the card they hand employees. It started with startup corporate cards, then added bank accounts, bill pay, travel, reimbursements, and spend controls so more company money flows through Brex software. That broadens revenue from interchange into SaaS, interest, and FX, and makes Brex harder to displace once approvals, cards, and reconciliation are all tied together.1 2 3 4

  • The product expansion is concrete. Brex now sells Brex Travel, Brex Bill Pay, Brex Bank Account, Brex Card, and Brex Spend Management. For a startup or mid market customer, that means one vendor can handle employee swipes, vendor invoices, reimbursements, and cash storage in one workflow.1
  • Moving upmarket changes how Brex expands horizontally. In SMB, it sells the all in one bundle. In enterprise, it lands as a best of breed card and spend product inside tools like Navan and Coupa, then uses those payment workflows to cross sell more of the suite.1 4
  • This also explains the split versus competitors. Ramp has pushed harder into bill pay and SaaS workflow expansion, while Mercury is more bank account and deposit led. Brex sits between them, using software to deepen spend control while also monetizing deposits and treasury like a startup bank.2 3

The next leg is for Brex to turn every payment surface into a wedge. If it keeps landing through cards, embedded travel, procurement, and global payments, then expanding into adjacent finance software becomes less about selling a new product and more about pulling more spend and cash into an existing operating system.1 2
