Google Duet Commoditizing Slide Generation

Diving deeper into

Gamma

Company Report
Google's Duet AI threatening to commoditize the basic "generate slides from text" functionality that initially fueled Gamma's growth.

The real threat is not that Google builds a better AI slide generator, it is that slide generation becomes a free checkbox inside the tools people already use all day. Gamma itself has said AI solved its early activation problem by getting users past the blank page fast, but it also built the company around a deeper bet, that retention comes from a new web native format with responsive cards, interactivity, and publishing, not from one shot prompt to deck output alone.1 2 3 4 5

  • Microsoft has already turned deck creation into a native PowerPoint workflow. Copilot can create a presentation from a prompt or from an existing file, then refine individual slides inside the same app. That matters because the user never has to leave the Office workflow, move files, or get a new tool approved.6 7 8
  • Gamma has long positioned its product as closer to a micro website than a classic deck. Its cards reflow across screen sizes, support interactive elements, and can be shared asynchronously online. That is a different job than making a 16 by 9 slideshow, and it is harder for incumbents to copy without breaking their old slide model.2 3 5
  • The history of the category points the same way. Pitch stayed closer to collaborative presentation software and was at $9.4M estimated revenue in 2024, while Gamma reached $101.9M by October 2025 after expanding beyond slides into docs, microsites, and other outputs. The winner is looking less like the best slide app and more like the best AI content surface.1 4 9

This pushes Gamma further toward becoming an AI native publishing layer for work, where a prompt can become a deck, a doc, a landing page, or a social asset. As Microsoft and Google absorb basic slide generation into their suites, the standalone companies that keep growing will be the ones that own a broader creation workflow, not a single slide making trick.1 4 5 9
