SAP as Partner and Competitor

Diving deeper into

n8n

Company Report
SAP is both a partner and a potential competitor if it deepens native orchestration inside Joule.

The real risk is that SAP can use distribution and product embedding to turn n8n from an independent control layer into a feature inside SAP’s own AI stack. n8n is now being embedded natively in Joule Studio and sold inside SAP’s environment, where customers can use existing BTP credits and SAP managed identity and operations. That makes SAP a powerful route to enterprise adoption, but it also gives SAP a front row seat to the workflow layer that n8n wants to own across many systems.1 2 3 4

  • The partnership is already deep. SAP invested in n8n in May 2026, valuing it at $5.2B, and n8n said the product would be embedded inside Joule Studio. That is more than a connector partnership, it puts n8n inside SAP’s AI development surface where enterprise teams actually build agents and automations.1 2
  • SAP is also clearly building its own orchestration layer. SAP describes Joule as coordinating assistants and agents across SAP and non-SAP systems, and SAP launched Joule Studio with managed runtime, governance, and pro code agent tooling. If SAP keeps expanding those native orchestration features, the gap between partner and substitute gets smaller.3 4 5
  • This is the same bundling pattern seen elsewhere. Salesforce ties Agentforce to MuleSoft and Data 360 so agents can reach business systems and data without leaving the Salesforce stack. n8n’s counterposition is neutrality, which matters when a customer wants one workflow canvas across SAP, Salesforce, internal APIs, and everything else.5 6 7

The next phase is a fight over who becomes the default control plane for enterprise workflows. If SAP keeps Joule focused on SAP centered use cases, n8n can thrive as the cross stack layer. If SAP pushes deeper into general purpose orchestration, n8n will need its independence and multi system reach to stay clearly distinct.2 3 4 5 7
