Perplexity and Claude are the ones we worry about most.

This points to a market where the real threat is not another point startup, but foundation model companies moving up into the full workflow layer. Claude brings the model, trust, and growing integrations. Perplexity brings consumer distribution and an assistant that already sits closer to search, mobile, and browser actions. For Sauna, that means competing against companies that can ship both the brain and more of the operating surface around the user.

  • The product gap is concrete. Sauna is built around long running cloud sandboxes, persistent memory, and background work across email, files, chat, and tasks. In the interview, that is framed as the core architectural edge over one shot agents like Manus and device tethered flows like Claude Code.
  • Claude is dangerous because Anthropic has already turned model capability into a native computer use tool. That lets developers give Claude screenshots, mouse control, and keyboard input, which means the model vendor can keep climbing from chat into direct software operation.
  • Perplexity is dangerous for the opposite reason, distribution. It has pushed from answer engine into Android assistant and agentic browsing with Comet. That puts it upstream at the moment a user asks for something, before a separate workspace product ever gets opened.

The next phase of this market will be a fight to own the default place where knowledge work gets delegated. If Claude keeps packaging stronger tool use into the model, and Perplexity keeps expanding from search into action surfaces, startups like Sauna will need to win by making persistent memory and background execution feel meaningfully better in daily work.
