Whatnot's rapid push into 35+ new categories risks diluting its core collectibles differentiation while straining trust-and-safety resources

The real risk is not just that Whatnot looks less collectible centric, it is that every new category adds a new fraud and policy playbook while the app still wins by making purchases feel fast, fun, and live. Whatnot began in trading cards and memorabilia, but now spans more than 250 categories, with gated approval and extra authentication work in higher risk areas like luxury. Its own trust disclosures show moderation already operates at large scale, which makes expansion as much an operations challenge as a merchandising one.1 2 3 4 5

  • Collectibles trust is relatively legible on camera. A seller can show card edges, sealed boxes, or comic condition live. In categories like luxury bags, jewelry, beauty, or home goods, buyers need different checks around authenticity, damage, expiry, or return abuse, so one trust system has to branch into many category specific rules.2 3 4
  • Whatnot has already had to build heavier trust infrastructure to support that shift. The company says roughly one in three employees works in trust and safety, uses seller verification for all sellers, adds extra approval for some categories, and partners with Entrupy and Real Authentication for pre sale checks in luxury.3 4
  • Expansion also changes who Whatnot competes with. In collectibles it is close to Fanatics Live. In fashion and general merchandise it moves toward TikTok Shop, Shein Live, and broader commerce platforms. That can grow GMV, but it weakens the simple identity of being the place collectors open daily for cards, sneakers, and memorabilia.1 5 6

The next phase is likely a more segmented Whatnot, where growth depends on building category specific trust layers without losing the speed and energy that made collectibles work. The winners in live commerce will be the platforms that can feel like a specialized marketplace in each category, not a generic mall with livestreams attached.1 3 4 6
