CoreWeave Early Nvidia Chip Access

Diving deeper into

CoreWeave

Company Report
its most favored nation relationship with Nvidia has allowed it to both scale faster to meet demand and offer higher-powered GPUs at a time when AWS and Azure customers report persistent resource shortages.

This reveals that CoreWeave’s real moat was not just owning GPUs, but getting earlier and deeper access to Nvidia’s best chips than general cloud rivals could reliably pass through to customers. That let CoreWeave say yes when labs and app builders needed H100 class capacity fast, while AWS and Azure were still expensive, quota constrained, or missing the production setup customers wanted, which pulled urgent AI demand toward a specialist cloud built around Nvidia first.1 2 3 4 5 6

  • Nvidia had a strong reason to back CoreWeave. CoreWeave was already one of Nvidia’s biggest customers in 2023, at 4.5% of Nvidia revenue, and Nvidia invested in the company while CoreWeave used debt financing to buy more H100s. That created a flywheel where chip access supported faster buildout, which supported more chip purchases.1 2 5
  • The shortage showed up in real customer behavior. Heyday moved its ML compute to CoreWeave because AWS GPUs were the wrong fit earlier, and later H100s on AWS still cost two to three times as much as CoreWeave. CoreWeave also had the production features, like Kubernetes, autoscaling, public APIs, and VPC connectivity, that made those GPUs usable in a live product.3 6
  • This is why CoreWeave could sell even to a competitor. Microsoft signed a contract worth more than $2B with CoreWeave to cover Azure demand it could not meet itself. In the same period, CoreWeave scaled from 3 data centers in 2023 to 28 by the end of 2024, showing that preferred chip access translated into physical capacity faster than hyperscalers could make generally available.2 4 5

The next phase is less about winning a one time shortage and more about staying first in line for each new Nvidia generation. If CoreWeave keeps pairing early chip access with production grade cloud software, it can remain the overflow valve for hyperscalers and the default home for frontier AI workloads that cannot wait in line.4 5 6
