Gamma's Defensible New Work Artifact

Gamma

Company Report
This strategic pivot aims to establish a distinct category that large incumbents would find more difficult to replicate.

The real moat is not AI slide drafting, it is owning a new work artifact that sits between a doc, a deck, and a lightweight webpage. Gamma is pushing toward cards, embeds, responsive layouts, and publishable microsites because Microsoft and Google can add slide generation inside their suites, but it is harder for them to replace a format built for live presenting, async sharing, mobile reading, and web publishing in the same object.1 2 3 4 5

  • Gamma started this direction before the AI boom. Its early product thesis was that fixed 16 by 9 slides were a legacy format from print and projector workflows, while modern work needed expandable cards, embeds, and layouts that reflow across devices.2 3
  • The workflow Gamma wants to own is concrete. A PM can paste a PRD, turn it into a management update, hide detail behind expandable sections, publish it as a link, then reuse the same artifact for internal review or customer sharing instead of rebuilding the story across docs, slides, and webpages.2 3
  • Incumbents are already commoditizing the obvious part. Microsoft Copilot can create presentations from files inside PowerPoint, and Google Slides now offers Gemini generated presentations from Docs, Sheets, PDFs, and prior decks. That makes plain doc to deck generation a feature, not a category. Gamma’s answer is to compete on the medium itself.1 4 5

This points toward Gamma becoming less like a presentation app and more like a general purpose packaging layer for business ideas. If it keeps winning, the product that starts as make me slides becomes publish this as a polished, interactive object anywhere work happens, which is a broader and more defensible market than slides alone.1 3
