This is a bet that the winning hypersonic missile will be the one the military can buy by the hundreds, not the one that posts the most extreme lab performance. Blackbeard is being shaped like a production program from day one, with in house propulsion and guidance, cheaper parts where they are good enough, and a design meant to move from test shots into repeatable factory output and service integration fast.
