Lending Could Double Chime Revenue

Chime

Company Report
Lending has the potential to roughly double Chime's revenues

Lending is the clearest path for Chime to turn a big but low monetization user base into something that looks more like a bank. Chime was at about $1.7B of estimated 2024 revenue, almost all built on card spend and direct deposit behavior, while its lending stack already exited 2025 at more than $40B annualized origination volume. The strategic point is simple, once Chime can repeatedly lend small amounts into paycheck linked accounts, it starts earning on the same customer twice, once when money is spent, and again when money is borrowed.1 2 3 4

  • The raw math is why doubling revenue is plausible. Chime already reaches millions of direct deposit users, and internal research tied that base to roughly $214 ARPU in 2024. Adding installment loans, paycheck advances, and overdraft style credit layers a new revenue stream onto customers Chime already paid to acquire.1 2 4
  • The product design matters. Chime built lending around small, short duration, paycheck adjacent use cases, not big balance revolving credit. The ex employee interview describes the logic, direct deposit gives visibility into repayment, which lowers default risk. That same pattern now shows up in Instant Loans, SpotMe, and MyPay.2 4
  • The comparables show what happens when a neobank adds credit successfully. In 2023, Nubank generated $1.6B from lending versus $1.2B from interchange, and Monzo generated £90M from lending versus £127M from interchange. Monzo also derived 23% of 2023 gross revenue from loans, showing how lending can become a major second engine rather than a side feature.4 5 6

From here, the upside comes from distribution and repetition. Chime can push lending through its existing app, its direct deposit base, and its newer employer and payroll channel, which should lower acquisition cost versus standalone lenders. If origination keeps compounding and repayment stays tight, Chime moves from being interchange led to credit and interchange led, which is how revenue can step up again from this scale.1 3 7
