Jackie Reses turns Lead into API bank
Lead Bank
This deal mattered because it put a chartered bank in the hands of operators who had already learned at Square that owning the bank layer changes the economics and speed of fintech. Jackie Reses came out of Square Financial Services, where she helped build Block’s in house bank and lending stack, then teamed with other former Square executives to buy Lead and rebuild it as a bank with its own API, so fintechs could plug straight into deposits, payments, cards, and lending instead of working through a middleware middleman.1 2 3 4
- Luna Parent was the acquisition vehicle, but the strategic point was operating control. The buyer group was not a passive investor syndicate. It was a team of fintech operators, including Ronak Vyas, Homam Maalouf, and Erica Khalili, assembled to turn a Kansas City community bank into fintech infrastructure.1 2 4
- That background shows up in how Lead makes money. Rather than just rent out a sponsor bank relationship, Lead exposes its own banking rails so partners can open FDIC insured accounts, move money over ACH, RTP, Fedwire, issue cards, and originate loans. The bank earns transaction fees, a share of interchange, and interest income on loans and deposits.2 3
- Lead’s closest comparable is Column, another bank plus API model, but the customer mix is different. Column became the home for Brex and Mercury, while Lead leaned harder into lending heavy programs like Affirm and broader U.S. banking for Revolut. That helps explain why Lead’s revenue mix has been more interest driven than Column’s.2 3 5
Going forward, the value of the 2022 acquisition keeps compounding if Lead continues to be one of the few banks that combines a charter, compliance, payments rails, and developer infrastructure in one stack. That position can keep pulling in larger fintech programs, and it is a big reason investors later supported Lead at a far higher valuation.2 3 4 5
