Company Report
Its valuation has increased 5X in just six months
Analyzed 8 sources

The 5X jump showed that investors were no longer valuing Animoca like a mobile game studio, they were valuing it like a leveraged holding company on top of the NFT boom. In mid 2021, the company was financed at about $1B, then by January 18, 2022 it raised $358.9M at a pre money valuation above $5B, after a year in which gains from investments and digital assets far exceeded its in app transaction revenue.1 2 3 4

  • The business mix explains the rerating. In 2021, Animoca generated $140M from commissions on in app purchases, but $529.6M from investment and digital asset gains. That means the market was paying for exposure to token and equity upside across its portfolio, not just for sales inside its own games.4 2
  • The step up happened in two fast moves. Animoca announced an $88.9M raise in May 2021 at a $1B valuation, completed a $138.9M round by July 2021 at the same $1B pre money, then raised again in January 2022 above $5B. The valuation jump tracked the peak NFT and metaverse financing window.5 6 1
  • Comparable companies in the same period were also being priced on ecosystem potential. Epic Games and Rec Room were framed around metaverse scale and user economies, but Animoca was more financialized. It owned stakes and tokens across many projects, so its value moved more like a web3 index fund attached to a game publisher.7 8 2

Going forward, Animoca's valuation path depends less on whether one game breaks out, and more on whether it can keep turning game launches, token holdings, and minority stakes into repeatable cash generation. That pushes the company toward becoming durable web3 infrastructure capital for gaming, not just a developer of hit titles.2 3 4
