Dataminr can supply high value alerts, but the platform that turns those alerts into assignments, approvals, logistics actions, and after action records becomes the system a commander or analyst renews first. In defense software, control of daily workflow matters more than control of any single data feed, because it is where switching costs, user habits, and budget ownership accumulate.

Dataminr is strongest at finding and packaging early signals from public data, and it has pushed further into government with a Palantir Foundry application and a $318M U.S. defense contract. That makes it easier for Dataminr to plug into a larger command stack, but it also frames Dataminr as an input layer inside someone else’s operating environment.

Palantir is built around owning the action layer. Its defense stack runs on private and classified networks, extends to tactical edge devices, and is designed to combine third party models and external data with internal mission data. Once alerts are tied to a shared ontology, case workflow, and audit trail, the platform can bundle more seats and modules into each renewal.

This pattern already shows up across adjacent defense software. Anduril has used software led defense relationships to open a broader app ecosystem, while Govini has moved from supply chain analytics into live operational workflows. In both cases, the closer the product gets to core decisions and execution, the more pricing power shifts from data provider to workflow owner.
The next phase is a stack fight over who becomes the default operating layer for defense and intelligence teams. Dataminr can keep growing as the fastest alerting layer, but the biggest long term contract expansion will accrue to the platform that connects alerts to planning, coordination, and action across the mission system.
