These partners could potentially develop competing solutions or change partnership terms unfavorably

This risk matters because Navan is not just buying distribution from bank partners, it is outsourcing part of the product experience that makes travel, cards, and expense feel like one workflow. Navan Connect lets customers keep existing card programs while piping transaction data from roughly 250 banks and 100 currencies into automated reconciliation. That makes bank relationships a growth lever, but it also gives issuers a direct path to copy the same embedded workflow or renegotiate economics once Navan has proven demand.

  • The Citi relationship is large enough to matter at go to market level. It extends Navan into about 25,000 commercial card programs and roughly $42B in annual U.S. charge volume, which helps Navan sell expense software without forcing a card switch. That same installed base is also a tempting market for Citi to serve more directly.
  • The Brex partnership shows how quickly a partner can become a competitor. BrexPay for Navan is the preferred card inside Navan for enterprise travel, with per booking virtual cards and full reconciliation, while Brex also sells its own travel, spend management, and bill pay stack to overlapping customers.
  • Enterprise buyers often split travel, card, and procurement decisions across different teams, which creates room for best of breed partnerships today. It also means Navan can be swapped out piecemeal if a bank or spend platform builds better native travel payment controls and keeps the same reconciliation quality.

The market is moving toward tighter bundles between card issuers, spend software, and travel booking. Navan will keep pushing to own the workflow layer, but its strongest position comes from making bank and card partners more useful than going alone. The more indispensable its reconciliation and policy engine becomes, the harder it is for partners to replace it without rebuilding the full travel and expense stack.
