they will actually eventually need a completely flexible modeling tool

This is the key wedge that separates flexible modeling platforms from workflow first FP&A tools. Headcount plans and budget approvals can be templated, but revenue logic usually cannot. Every business has its own pricing, sales cycle, churn pattern, inventory timing, or geography mix, so finance teams eventually fall back to a tool where they can build custom formulas, connect live actuals, and change assumptions without waiting for the vendor to support their edge case.

  • In practice, larger companies often keep an enterprise planning system for standard workflows like headcount and opex, then use a separate tool for custom revenue models. The common pattern is to model the hard part outside the core FP&A system, then paste the outputs back in for budgeting and reporting.
  • That is why Causal was built around modeling primitives first, then integrations and dashboards second. The product maps accounting and warehouse data into variables and categories, so a finance team can refresh actuals monthly while keeping a custom model for cohorts, departments, or scenario planning.
  • The market has repeatedly rewarded tools that own a narrower finance workflow, but those companies have also been absorbed into bigger finance stacks. Brex bought Pry in April 2022, BILL completed its Finmark acquisition in November 2022, and Lucanet acquired Causal on October 31, 2024, showing how planning tends to get pulled into broader CFO platforms over time.

The category is heading toward a split architecture. Standard planning workflows will keep consolidating into broader CFO suites, while the hardest revenue and scenario modeling will stay with products built for flexibility first. The winning platforms will be the ones that can start as a simple reporting layer, then become the place where finance and operating teams do their most custom forward looking work.
