Western defense companies seek out battle-tested companies as they look to build all-in-one, land-and-air autonomous defense companies

This marks a shift from selling a single drone to selling a whole robotic force package. The valuable target is no longer just an aircraft or a ground rover, it is a combined stack of airframes, ground vehicles, autonomy software, sensors, and manufacturing that has already survived real combat. That is why Western buyers are pairing with or acquiring Ukrainian teams whose designs have been tested under fire, then wrapping those designs into larger multi domain product lines.1 2 3 4 5

  • Quantum Systems is the clearest example. It bought FERNRIDE in December 2025 to add autonomous ground mobility software, then formed a joint venture with Tencore in 2026 to co produce 2,000 TerMIT ground robots in Germany. That turns a drone maker into a company that can sell air vehicles, ground vehicles, and the software layer connecting them.2 3 4
  • Ratel shows why Ukrainian manufacturers are attractive takeover targets. It was the top recipient of Ukrainian UGV spending in Q1 2026, and its proposed sale to Swarmer for up to $224M would combine a combat used ground robot producer with an aerial autonomy company that says its software has supported more than 100,000 combat missions in Ukraine.1 5 6
  • The end state looks more like a new prime contractor than a component vendor. Rheinmetall is already partnering with Auterion on standardized software for unmanned systems, while newer players like Anduril and Shield AI are pushing the same model, one operator supervising multiple coordinated machines instead of piloting one drone at a time.5 7 8

The next phase is platform consolidation around command software and factory capacity. Companies that can fuse Ukrainian battlefield designs with Western production, certification, and procurement access will become the default suppliers for militaries that want one vendor for reconnaissance, resupply, strike, and coordination across air and ground systems.2 3 4 5 7
