Layer 7's bidirectional recording and stimulation capability creates a path from assistive devices to therapeutic neuromodulation.

Bidirectional capability matters because it moves Layer 7 from being a brain reading tool to being a brain writing tool. That changes the product from a device that helps a patient control a cursor or speech decoder into one that could also sense abnormal activity and send electrical pulses back to the cortex. The same thin surface array already cleared for recording, monitoring, and stimulation can therefore support a stepwise expansion from temporary mapping and assistive use cases toward closed loop therapies.

  • Precision already has a concrete regulatory foothold for this path. In March 2025, FDA cleared Layer 7-T as a cortical electrode under 510(k), and the company announced commercial authorization for up to 30 day implantation for recording, monitoring, and stimulation on the brain surface.
  • The competitive split in BCI is really about where the device sits and what that enables. Precision places a high density film on the cortical surface through a small opening, which is more intervention than Synchron’s blood vessel approach but less tissue penetrating than Neuralink, while preserving a more direct route to stimulation based therapy.
  • Once a system can both read and stimulate, the data loop gets more valuable. Recordings from many procedures can be used to train decoders that recognize seizure patterns, motor intent, or recovery signals, then stimulation can be tuned to each patient instead of delivering the same fixed program to everyone.

The next phase is a move from procedure support and assistive control into indication specific therapy programs. That means building separate evidence packages for epilepsy, stroke, movement disorders, and sensory restoration, but the platform advantage is already visible, one surface implant architecture can become both a data engine and a treatment delivery layer.
