Mirakl Powers Retail Marketplace Monetization
Mirakl at $218M ARR
This shift matters because the marketplace model gives mature retailers a way to grow assortment and profit dollars without tying up cash in inventory. Instead of buying goods upfront, the retailer lets outside sellers list on its site, takes a commission when an item sells, and can later sell those sellers ad placement. Best Buy used Mirakl to launch this model in August 2025, more than doubling online assortment at launch, then reaching about 1,100 sellers and an 11x SKU increase soon after.1 2 3 4 5
- The economic appeal is simple. First party retail requires the retailer to buy, store, and mark down inventory. A third party marketplace pushes that working capital risk to sellers, while the retailer keeps the traffic, checkout, and customer relationship and collects fees on each sale.4 6
- Ads usually come after assortment density. Once many sellers compete for the same search results, sponsored placement becomes sellable. That is why marketplaces often sequence monetization from commissions first, then ads, because ads only work when sellers feel they need extra visibility to win demand.6 7
- For Mirakl, retailers like Best Buy are proof that marketplace software is moving from edge case to core commerce infrastructure. Mirakl says its platform supported $15B of GMV in 2025 across 450 plus enterprise launches, and its seller network and faster launch times make buy versus build increasingly one sided for incumbents.4 8
Going forward, more large retailers are likely to treat marketplaces less like a side catalog expansion and more like a margin engine layered onto existing traffic. That favors infrastructure vendors that can supply sellers, onboarding, catalog controls, and ad tooling in one stack, which is exactly where Mirakl is concentrating its lead.4 6 8
