Hightouch’s expansion shows that the real prize was never moving rows of data, it was controlling the marketer workflow that decides who gets targeted, when a campaign launches, and what data feeds it. Reverse ETL got Hightouch into the warehouse, but Customer Studio, Identity Resolution, Match Booster, and newer AI products let it sell daily operating software to marketing teams with bigger budgets and clearer revenue impact.1 2 3 4 5 6

  • The product moved from SQL driven plumbing to marketer facing tools. Customer Studio lets teams build audiences on top of warehouse models, Identity Resolution writes unified profiles back into the warehouse, and Match Booster adds extra identifiers during syncs so ad platforms can recognize more users.3 4 5 6
  • That shift changed the buyer. A reverse ETL tool is usually justified by a data team as infrastructure, while a composable CDP can be justified by growth and lifecycle teams on campaign performance, ad match rates, and audience activation. That opens much larger CDP and marketing automation budgets.1 2 6
  • The backdrop is category consolidation. Pure reverse ETL became too narrow, with Census agreeing to sell to Fivetran in May 2025. Hightouch avoided that trap by moving up into the application layer, similar to how CDPs and marketing platforms keep bundling audience building, orchestration, and activation together.1 2 7 8

The next step is deeper convergence with Braze, Klaviyo, and ad platforms. Hightouch is already layering AI decisioning, ad creative generation, and lifecycle campaign creation on top of warehouse data, which pushes it closer to becoming the control plane for marketer actions while the warehouse remains the system of record.1 2 6
