Platform 1 was built for long range medical runs, 80 kilometers with a 4 pound payload, then a parachute drop. Platform 2 trades range for precision, 6 to 8 pounds within 10 miles, using a tethered droid that places the package on a surface as small as a patio table. That is the hardware shift that opens restaurant, grocery, and doorstep pharmacy use cases.

The workflow also changes at the merchant. Staff load orders through a dockside portal, the drone flies out, the customer tracks it live, and the droid handles the last few feet. Cleveland Clinic chose Platform 2 specifically because it can deliver specialty prescriptions to homes in dense areas, then later expand into lab samples and hospital at home supplies.

This precision advantage matters competitively because last mile delivery is won or lost on where the package actually lands. Wing has shown sub 20 minute retail delivery from Walmart parking lots, while Manna lowers packages by tether into yards and driveways. Zipline is pushing further toward exact home placement, which supports higher value deliveries where missed handoff, theft, or damage is unacceptable.
The next phase is less about proving drones can fly and more about building dense local networks where precision delivery justifies premium use cases. As Zipline adds more retail, restaurant, and healthcare nodes around the same hubs, Platform 2 can evolve from a specialized aircraft into shared neighborhood infrastructure for urgent, lightweight commerce.
