Liquid Death Shelf Space Risk
Liquid Death
This risk is really about distribution power, not just product taste. In energy drinks, winning means getting a few feet of cold box and shelf space in convenience stores, grocery, and club, then keeping it through fast sell through, retailer programs, and branded marketing support. Liquid Death already has brand awareness, but Red Bull, Monster, and now Celsius sit inside much larger bottling and retail systems that make reorders, promotions, and national resets easier to secure.1 2 4 5 6
- Monster has had a long term strategic partnership with Coca Cola since 2014, built specifically to accelerate energy drink distribution. That matters because shelf space is often negotiated through broader bottler and retailer relationships, not one SKU at a time.4
- PepsiCo signed a long term U.S. distribution deal with Celsius in 2022, then expanded that position in 2025 by making Celsius the captain of PepsiCo’s U.S. energy portfolio, including Rockstar and Alani Nu. That gives better for you energy challengers a far stronger route to market than most independents have.5 6 7 8
- Liquid Death has shown it can build a beverage brand quickly, reaching an estimated $333M of revenue in 2024, but its core business was canned water and tea. Moving into energy means entering the most fought over cooler set in beverage, where incumbents also defend space with sports sponsorships, trade spend, and retailer incentives.1 2 3
The next phase is less about whether Liquid Death can launch an energy can, and more about whether it can earn permanent placement account by account. If Sparkling Energy drives repeat purchase and lifts retailer dollars per door, distribution can compound. If not, incumbents will keep the best slots and Liquid Death will stay a niche line extension instead of a scaled energy brand.1 2 4 5 6
