DeepSeek is trying to win the format war for open models, not just sell tokens. By publishing weights, permissive licenses, and OpenAI compatible endpoints, it makes DeepSeek the easiest model family to plug into existing products, host through third parties, or fork into custom deployments. That broad distribution matters because once developers, inference hosts, and enterprise tools standardize around one model family, the default hosted API often captures the paid usage later.

  • The licensing is unusually permissive for a frontier model. DeepSeek said DeepSeek-R1 code and models are MIT licensed, and that API outputs can be used for fine tuning and distillation. That removes a major legal blocker for community forks, wrappers, fine tuned variants, and commercial hosting.
  • The install base already extends beyond DeepSeek’s own endpoint. Together AI lists DeepSeek alongside Llama and Mistral in its model catalog, and Hebbia used Fireworks to get DeepSeek live through OpenAI style endpoints within a day, mainly to satisfy customer demand for the latest open models.
  • This is the same playbook that helped Mistral turn open distribution into enterprise relevance. Open release proves portability and sovereign control, then paid demand shifts toward managed inference, private deployments, and implementation support. DeepSeek’s open releases similarly make it a reference model for clouds, governments, and app builders that do not want closed vendor lock in.

The next step is for DeepSeek to become infrastructure by default inside agent platforms, coding tools, and sovereign deployments. If that happens, more of the ecosystem will be built to expect DeepSeek compatibility out of the box, which strengthens its API pull even when many users never touch DeepSeek’s own app or run its models on DeepSeek’s own servers.
