Figma Land and Expand
Figma
Figma’s land and expand motion works because the file itself becomes the workplace, not just the output. A small design team can start in self serve, then pull in PMs, engineers, writers, and marketers as viewers, commenters, and eventually editors when those people need to reuse components, edit copy, or move prototypes forward. That turns collaboration into a seat expansion engine inside the same account.1 2 3 4
- At Lime, roughly 8 or 9 designers sat inside a broader base of 35 to 40 Figma users. Product managers, engineers, and other teams were given editing access so they could repurpose design files for partner materials and internal workflows, which shows how paid usage can spread well beyond the original design team.2
- In one Series E startup, expansion often started with a shared file. People first came in as viewers or commenters during reviews, then moved to editor seats once their role became recurring and hands on. The upgrade trigger was practical usage, not a formal rollout driven by IT.1
- This is different from Canva’s broader but lighter adoption pattern. Canva can reach more roles faster, but its own enterprise interview described large company penetration as fragmented by team, while Figma’s deeper workflow role in product design makes it more likely to become the source of truth for a specific cross functional product org.3 4
The next leg of expansion is less about selling more designer seats and more about packaging adjacent workflows around the same canvas. Products like FigJam, shared libraries, and enterprise controls such as SSO and access management push Figma from a design tool into a system that more teams use every week, which should make account consolidation and larger enterprise contracts easier over time.1 2 3 4
