Developer Docs as Agent Infrastructure
$21.4M/year Vercel of developer docs
This shift makes documentation part of the product runtime, not just the help center. When Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and app builders pick tools by reading docs before any human developer does, the winning docs are the ones an agent can parse, query, and trust. That is why Mintlify is adding MCP, spec synced references, and agent oriented workflows, and why agent traffic rose to 66% of measured traffic across Mintlify powered docs in July 2026.1 2 3 4
- For a human, good docs mean clear examples and nice design. For an agent, good docs mean structured pages, stable schemas, OpenAPI coverage, and machine accessible endpoints like MCP. Mintlify now auto generates an MCP server from public docs and API specs, so an agent can search docs and call APIs from the same surface.2 5
- This is the same pattern showing up elsewhere in the stack. Supabase became a default backend because agents could reliably spin up database, auth, and storage from one bundled interface. Vercel became a default deploy layer as agents initiated more than 50% of deployments by June 2026. Mintlify is the documentation layer of that same agent first workflow.6 7 8
- The monetization implication is simple. If docs are where agents decide what product to use, docs stop being a support cost and start acting like an acquisition channel. Mintlify leans into that with public docs referral loops, Powered by Mintlify links, and tooling that helps docs stay current so agents do not spread stale instructions or broken pricing logic.1 3 4 9
The next step is broader knowledge infrastructure. Once agents read public docs, the natural expansion is into internal handbooks, support content, and other company knowledge that agents also use to answer questions and take actions. The docs platform that becomes the most reliable source of structured company knowledge can sit upstream of both human support and agent execution.4 10
