Varo's chartered retail bank model

Diving deeper into

Varo

Company Report
As a chartered bank rather than a partner-bank fintech, Varo earns most of its money the way a traditional retail bank does off a mobile-first product

Varo’s charter means the business keeps more of the banking stack, but it also inherits the economics and operating burden of being a real bank. Instead of splitting card economics and deposit functions with a sponsor bank, Varo issues the account itself, holds the deposits, earns interchange directly on debit usage, and can generate net interest income from those balances. That makes the product look like a fintech app, but the revenue engine look much closer to a small retail bank.1 2 3 4 5

  • A partner bank neobank usually shares interchange with multiple parties, including the sponsor bank and card infrastructure providers. Varo’s charter collapses some of that stack. The upside is better unit economics per active debit customer. The tradeoff is full responsibility for compliance, capital, fraud controls, and bank supervision.1 4 5
  • The product is still mobile first and consumer simple, checking, savings, direct deposit, debit card, P2P transfer, external account linking. But the money flows are classic retail bank flows. Customers park deposits, get paid into the account, spend on the debit card, move money in and out, and Varo monetizes those behaviors through interchange, fees, and spread income.2 3 5
  • That also explains why Varo’s mix differs from software like fintechs. Chime and similar neobanks were built around interchange split through partner banks, then tried to add lending and other products to raise ARPU. Varo started with the bank charter path, so it was built to monetize balance sheet activity earlier, even if non interest income still dominates the top line.3 4 5

The next phase is whether Varo can turn charter ownership into deeper banking revenue, especially lending and higher margin deposit monetization. If it does, the model moves away from a thin debit card business and toward a fuller consumer bank built inside a phone, with more revenue per customer and less dependence on swipe volume alone.1 3 4 5
