Redwood's Pack Manager Enables Reuse

Redwood Materials

Company Report
Through Redwood Energy, Redwood competes with conventional storage suppliers such as Tesla Energy and Fluence, along with smaller companies specializing in second-life EV batteries.

Redwood Energy is trying to turn a recycling bottleneck into a product moat. Its edge is not just cheaper batteries, it is control of the used pack supply and software that lets mixed EV packs behave like one storage plant. That makes Redwood different from Tesla Energy and Fluence, which sell standardized systems built around new batteries, longer operating records, and formal service packages.1 2 3 4 5

  • Redwood sits earlier in the battery chain than most storage vendors. It says it receives over 20 GWh of lithium ion batteries per year, then decides pack by pack whether reuse or recycling creates more value. A pure repurposer cannot make that same choice, because it only wins when the pack stays in service.1 2 6
  • The Pack Manager is the practical reason Redwood can compete. It regulates each pack and translates different battery management systems, so packs from different car makers and chemistries can share one site. That is a very different engineering problem from Tesla Megapack or Fluence Gridstack, which start with uniform new hardware.1 3 4
  • Smaller second life specialists like Moment Energy compete more directly on repurposing, but they do not have Redwood's feedstock reach. Moment has emphasized certification and safe screening of used packs, while Redwood is already deploying larger systems such as a 12 MW, 63 MWh Nevada microgrid and a 10 MWh Rivian factory project.1 5 6 7

The likely end state is a split market. Conventional suppliers should keep winning buyers that want bankable, repeatable systems with established warranties, while Redwood pushes second life storage into factories, data centers, and other customers that care most about cost, speed, and domestic battery supply. If Redwood keeps scaling feedstock and proving uptime, it can become the category's vertically integrated outlier.1 2 3 4 5
