Animoca Driven by NFT Token Gains
Animoca Brands
This line shows that Animoca in 2021 was operating less like a normal game publisher and more like a leveraged balance sheet on the NFT boom. The $529.6M came from marking up tokens and investment stakes tied to its portfolio, while the core game and transaction business generated $140M. That means reported earnings power in that period depended more on asset prices and portfolio appreciation than on players steadily spending inside games.1 3
- The gains were tied to a broad ownership stack. By late 2021, Animoca had invested in more than 150 web3 companies and held large token positions including SAND, REVV, GMEE, TOWER, plus portfolio tokens like AXS and FLOW. When those prices rose, Animoca booked outsized upside without needing equivalent cash revenue from gameplay.3
- This is structurally different from peers like Epic or Voodoo, where revenue mainly comes from selling games, virtual items, or ads. Animoca added a second engine, owning pieces of the ecosystem itself, so a hit game, a token rally, or a markup in a portfolio company could all flow into results.4 5
- The flip side is that this income line is much less repeatable than bookings from players. The same research notes that Animoca was heavily indexed to NFTs and the metaverse, so when token prices or NFT demand moved, reported performance could swing far faster than a conventional gaming company with subscription or in app purchase revenue.4
Going forward, the key shift is whether Animoca can keep moving from market driven gains to operating revenue from owned games, tokenization services, and web3 operations. If it does, the business looks more like a durable platform. If not, results will keep tracking crypto cycles as much as product adoption.6
