Google makes the instability explicit. AI Overviews are a core Search feature built on fast changing generative AI, and Google says they can make mistakes. When the answer surface is probabilistic and always evolving, measurement vendors have to sample more queries and smooth more noise to make their dashboards usable.
The likely direction is that AEO tools become less like classic SEO rank trackers and more like observability systems, with larger query panels, more frequent rescans, and engine specific models for what counts as visibility. The winners will be the platforms that can turn messy citation and mention data into stable budget level signals, even as ChatGPT, Google, and Perplexity keep changing the surface area.
