Douyin Capturing Commercial Search Intent
ByteDance
Douyin is turning search from a separate utility into the last step of shopping intent. A user watches a lipstick video, taps into the creator’s store, searches the brand name or product term inside Douyin, then buys without leaving the app. That matters because Baidu’s core advantage was being the place where commercial intent started, while Douyin is increasingly capturing that intent after discovery but before purchase.1 2 3 4
- Douyin already has enough search scale to matter. Internal research puts it at about 20 billion searches per month, roughly 6x Kuaishou, though still well below Baidu at roughly 120 billion to 150 billion. That means the threat is not total volume yet, but the quality of high buying intent queries moving into ByteDance’s app.1 2
- The engine behind that shift is commerce. ByteDance grew Douyin e-commerce from zero to more than $200B in GMV, and later research estimated Douyin at $96B of revenue in 2024. Once brands build stores, run livestreams, buy ads, and optimize product keywords inside Douyin, they give users a reason to search there instead of on Baidu.1 3 4
- This is the same pattern seen elsewhere in China. Xiaohongshu built roughly 600M daily searches by combining lifestyle content with product discovery, and research frames that as directly going after Baidu on search. The broader point is that search is moving toward apps where users can discover, compare, and transact in one flow.4 5
The next stage is a Chinese internet where search is split by intent. Baidu will remain important for broad web lookup, but product, brand, and local commercial queries will keep shifting toward closed apps like Douyin, where the result is not a link to another site but a video, a store page, and a checkout button.1 2 3 4 5
