Apollo Losing Control to Assistants

Company Report
If those costs grow faster than realized revenue, or assistants route tasks to competing providers, higher activity could produce weaker margins and less control over the customer relationship.

This risk is really about Apollo becoming infrastructure inside someone else’s interface, which can grow usage faster than it grows profit. When a rep runs enrichment or prospect research from Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity, Apollo may still be paying for third party data, validation, and model work, but the assistant owns the user interaction. That means more tasks can raise Apollo’s bill even when the customer sees the assistant, not Apollo, as the product they are using.1 2 3 4 5

  • Apollo is pushing hard into assistant driven workflows. Apollo Anywhere let customers use Apollo data and credits inside external AI tools, and this drove about 10x growth in credit consumption from March to August 2026. That keeps Apollo in the workflow, but it also means more activity now depends on channels Apollo does not control.1 4
  • The cost side is real because Apollo charges credits across enrichment and assistant actions, including third party waterfall enrichment. In practice, one user request can trigger multiple paid steps, like finding a company, validating a person, enriching fields, and writing output. If pricing to customers does not fully track that backend spend, margins compress as usage rises.2 3 5
  • Clay shows the other path. It split billing between data and workflow execution, charging separately for marketplace data and for each platform action. That is a direct response to the same problem, which is that orchestration work has value and cost on its own. Apollo will likely need a similarly explicit way to monetize workflow labor, not just data access.6 7 8

The next phase of competition is less about who has the biggest contact database, and more about who captures the control point for AI native sales work. If Apollo can stay embedded as the paid action layer across assistants, it can turn outside interfaces into distribution. If not, it risks being reduced to a behind the scenes data vendor while others own the customer relationship and margin pool.1 4 7 8
