Notion Reseller and Competitor

Diving deeper into

Notion

Company Report
Notion is simultaneously a reseller of Claude and Codex (via External Agents billed through Notion credits) and a competitor for the same budget
Analyzed 5 sources

Notion is trying to become the toll booth for agent work, but the same labs whose models it resells are also training users to bypass that toll booth and go straight to the source. Inside Notion, a team can spend Notion credits to run Claude Code and Codex as external agents alongside Notion Agent and Custom Agents, which helps Notion monetize model usage. But Claude Cowork and Codex also work as stand alone surfaces for research, drafting, automations, and cross tool actions, so every dollar of AI budget can either stay inside Notion or leak to the labs directly.1 2 3 4 5

  • This is different from classic SaaS competition because Notion both pays for frontier model access and marks it up through its own credit system. That makes its product surface and workflow context do the real economic work. If users feel they can get the same email, document, research, or automation outcome with Claude plus connectors for much less, Notion loses both software margin and usage revenue.1 2 5
  • The labs are strongest in single player work. Power users already run Codex and Claude across email, Slack, calendar, code, and call transcripts as a personal operating layer, often with custom connectors and direct tool access. That overlaps with many early Notion agent jobs, like summarizing, drafting, research, and follow up, before a task ever needs to become a shared workflow inside a workspace.3 4 5
  • Notion still has an advantage when work needs shared structure. Collaborative tools like ClickUp argue that real company workflows need tasks, approvals, permissions, comments, and durable records that a chat surface does not naturally provide. The more Notion can turn agent output into database rows, docs, assignments, and governed team processes, the more defensible its markup on external model usage becomes.2 4

The market is heading toward a split where model labs own raw inference and horizontal work platforms own context, workflow, and governance. Notion’s next phase is to prove that companies will keep paying its credits not just to access Claude and Codex, but to have those models operate inside a multiplayer system of record where the work persists, gets assigned, and compounds across the organization.1 2 3 4
