Whoop Joins CMS ACCESS Model
Whoop
This moves Whoop from selling wellness subscriptions to getting paid inside the healthcare system. Instead of relying only on consumer marketing to persuade athletes and health optimizers to buy a band, Whoop can now reach Medicare patients through a physician entity that bills through CMS’s ACCESS model, with a 12 month program built around the band, blood pressure readings, app engagement, and care coordination for chronic conditions like hypertension, pre diabetes, and high cholesterol.1 2 3 4 5
- The key shift is who pays. In Connected Care, eligible members pay nothing out of pocket and receive the Whoop membership, device, blood pressure monitor, and shipping, while care is delivered by WHOOP Physician Services, P.C. as part of the ACCESS model rather than as a normal consumer membership purchase.2 4 5
- ACCESS is built for technology enabled chronic care at scale. CMS launched it as a 10 year nationwide model starting July 5, 2026 for Medicare Part B enrolled participants, using outcome aligned payments to support chronic care delivery, which gives Whoop a reimbursement framework instead of forcing it to fit into one off wellness budgets.1
- Whoop has been assembling the inputs needed for a clinical workflow. Advanced Labs pulls biomarker testing into the app through Quest, while Connected Care combines wearable data with blood pressure and member reported information, creating a more complete picture that is useful for managing cardiometabolic risk, not just training recovery.3 4 6
The next step is for wearables to become front doors for longitudinal chronic care, especially in cardiometabolic health. If Whoop can turn passive tracking into measurable clinical outcomes under ACCESS, it gains a new distribution channel, a new payer, and a template for expanding from premium fitness membership into reimbursed care programs.1 2 4
