Consortium Data Beats Visitor IDs

their consortium data provides cross-client fraud histories that Fingerprint's customer-specific Visitor IDs cannot replicate.

The real moat here is network memory, not device matching accuracy. Fingerprint can tell one browser or phone apart from another and hand a customer a stable Visitor ID, but that history lives inside that customer’s own account. ThreatMetrix and TruValidate do something broader. They pool fraud outcomes across many clients, so a bank can flag a device, email, or identity pattern based on what another merchant, lender, or insurer already learned the hard way.

  • ThreatMetrix is built around a shared digital identity network. LexisNexis says customers contribute anonymized signals that are matched across different customers into LexID Digital, then used with device and behavioral data to score risk. That lets one client benefit from another client’s prior fraud observations.
  • TruValidate inherits the old iovation model and layers in more identity data. TransUnion says it performs 111 billion device reputation checks and uses more than 185 million confirmed fraud evidence reports, alongside phone, email, credit, and device linkages. That creates a cross client reputation file, not just a per app device fingerprint.
  • Fingerprint’s product is narrower and easier to adopt. Its core job is to generate a persistent Visitor ID from browser and device signals so a customer can recognize repeat visitors across sessions and devices in its own stack. That is valuable for checkout abuse, account signup, and bot blocking, but it does not by itself create an industry wide fraud memory.

This pushes Fingerprint toward buyers who want a fast API and control over their own workflows, while the incumbents stay strongest where shared fraud history matters most, especially banks, insurers, and government programs. The next step for the market is more bundling of device signals into larger decisioning products, where the winner is the vendor with the deepest feedback loop across customers.
