Specialists Outperform Plaid in Merchant Payments
Plaid
The core split is between data pipes and payment engines. Plaid built its business by helping apps connect to bank accounts for many jobs, like account linking, balance checks, identity, underwriting, and fraud. Specialists like Trustly, Tink, and TrueLayer are narrower. They focus on the checkout itself, where a small lift in conversion, fewer failed payments, faster settlement, and instant payouts can matter more to a merchant than broad data coverage.1 2 3 4 5 6
- Trustly sells merchants on payment performance, not just connectivity. Its pitch is direct bank payments with better cost, conversion, and consumer lifetime value, and it says it serves more than 9,000 merchants with access to 650 plus million consumers. That is a merchant product, not a general developer data layer.3
- Tink shows how strong that specialist lane has become in Europe. It says 10,000 merchants now use its Pay by Bank product through PSP partners, and it reached a peak of €100M in payment initiation volume in a single day. That scale comes from optimizing a specific payment workflow through distribution partners.4
- Plaid is responding by moving closer to the merchant workflow. Transfer is a US only multi rail payments product, and Transfer for Platforms is built for vertical SaaS products collecting rent, tuition, medical bills, and vendor payments, with onboarded sub ledgers, risk controls, payout tools, and KPI tracking. Its UK Visa partnership similarly targets one click pay by bank flows.1 2 5 6
The next phase is Plaid expanding from being the bank account connection inside fintech apps to being a full payment orchestration layer for bank payments. As pay by bank grows, the winners will be the providers that can pair broad coverage with measurable checkout gains, because merchants buy on approval, conversion, cost, and speed.1 2 4 5 6
