Mobile access depends on policies and court-supervised settlements controlled by Apple and Google

Epic cannot treat mobile as a normal distribution channel, because access and take rate are still set by gatekeepers that can change rules faster than Epic can change product. On iOS, external payment links in U.S. apps only opened after the April 30, 2025 contempt ruling against Apple, while Apple still uses region specific entitlements and purchase link rules elsewhere. On Android, Epic has more paths, but billing choice and store placement still run through Google programs and policies.1 2 3 4 5 6

  • This matters more for Epic than for most game publishers because Fortnite works best when every friend can join from any device. Earlier research estimated 73M iOS only Fortnite players lost access after Apple removed the app, showing how a single store decision can cut off both engagement and spending at scale.3
  • The revenue split can move sharply depending on the path. Epic built its case around offering direct payments at up to 20% lower prices, then later benefited from a ruling that barred Apple from charging fees on purchases made outside the app. On Android, alternative billing and external link programs still operate inside Google defined frameworks.4 5 6
  • Epic is also trying to become a storefront operator, not just a game developer. Its own mobile store reached 29M users and uses a 12% take rate, far below Apple’s historic 30%, which makes mobile policy a two sided issue for Epic, affecting both Fortnite economics and Epic’s ability to recruit third party developers.1 2

The next phase is a fight over who owns checkout and discovery on mobile. If Apple and Google keep loosening payment and distribution rules, Epic can turn Fortnite and the Epic Games Store into stronger mobile entry points. If those rules tighten again, mobile remains a volatile tax on Epic’s largest consumer business and its storefront ambitions.1 2 4 5 6
