BHP’s role around KoBold shows that AI exploration is becoming a capability the majors want to own from every angle, not a tool they plan to leave to startups. BHP can fund KoBold through BHP Ventures, work with it on exploration, and still build parallel options through its own teams, its Xplor program, and its alliance with Ivanhoe Electric. That means KoBold is selling into a customer that is also building its own substitutes.

  • BHP has made KoBold part of a broader option portfolio. Its venture arm lists KoBold among its partners, while BHP’s 2023 annual report said it had extended its partnership with KoBold to improve data driven exploration. That is less a one off bet than a structured way to sample outside technology while keeping control of deployment.
  • BHP is also building its own pipeline of exploration technology. BHP Xplor gives early stage explorers and mining tech companies US$500,000 in equity free funding plus access to BHP geologists and commercial staff. In practice, that lets BHP observe many teams upstream, before needing to buy a company or commit to one stack.
  • KoBold is not the only external supplier BHP can learn from. Ivanhoe Electric said its U.S. exploration alliance with BHP is designed to identify projects that could become 50 50 joint ventures, and Terra AI later raised a Series A with strategic participation from BHP Ventures. The pattern is multiple shots on goal across competing technical approaches.

This is heading toward a mining market where the edge comes less from having an AI model at all, and more from combining models with proprietary subsurface data, capital, permits, and operating infrastructure. That setup favors majors like BHP, and pushes KoBold to prove that owning great mineral rights can compound its software advantage into actual mine level returns.
