These platforms struggle with liquidity fragmentation and technical barriers that Polymarket has largely solved.

Polymarket’s edge is that it acts more like a single exchange than a loose set of crypto experiments. Early decentralized rivals made users bring their own wallet setup, navigate clunky interfaces, and trade in thin order books where each market had little depth. Polymarket fixed that with consumer grade onboarding, curated high interest markets, instant fills via USDC, and enough volume in sports, politics, and crypto that traders can usually get in and out without hunting across venues.1 2 3

  • Liquidity fragmentation is still a real category problem, but it now happens more across platforms than inside Polymarket itself. Infrastructure companies like Dome exist to match the same event across Kalshi, Polymarket, and niche venues, which only makes sense because order books remain split market by market and app by app.3
  • The technical barrier Polymarket removed was not blockchain complexity itself, but the need for users to behave like crypto developers. Earlier projects like Augur and Gnosis were built for users comfortable running Ethereum infrastructure, while Polymarket shipped a simpler front end and standardized markets that feel closer to sports betting or exchange trading.2
  • That usability translated into volume concentration. Polymarket reached about $9B of trading volume in 2024, then about $8.9B in May 2026 alone, while sports became roughly 40% of volume. Depth then compounds, because the biggest traders and market makers go where they can move size fastest, which pulls even more liquidity into the same venue.1 2 3

The next phase is a race between aggregation and ownership. More apps will plug prediction markets into sports books, brokerages, and crypto exchanges, but the platforms that already have the deepest books and easiest execution will keep attracting the most serious flow. That dynamic favors Polymarket, even as new wrappers and regional specialists keep emerging around it.1 3 4
