Base Sells Power Not Batteries

Base Power

Company Report
Battery lease fees ($228–$348/year per household) are the thinnest slice—at that rate alone, payback would take 20+ years.

The lease payment mostly exists to get a battery onto the wall, not to pay for the battery by itself. Base is installing a roughly $10,000 asset, before the $3,000 federal tax credit, and charging only $19 to $29 per month plus an upfront install fee, so the hardware fee on its own behaves more like a small access charge than a full equipment financing payment. That is why the model only works when Base also earns on power retailing and grid dispatch inside ERCOT.1 2 3 4

  • Base pairs the battery with a 36 month electricity contract at about 8¢ per kWh plus delivery fees in Texas. That turns the customer from a one time hardware install into a long lived retail power account, where Base can capture the spread between wholesale purchases and the rate on the bill each month.2 3 5
  • The deeper upside is control of a distributed battery fleet. Base says the battery agreement runs for 12 years, while ERCOT is a competitive market with retail providers and wholesale trading. That gives Base years to charge batteries when power is cheap and discharge when prices spike, which is where the short hardware payback really comes from.3 6 7
  • This is why the closest competitors are full stack energy retailers, not simple battery sellers. Sunrun and Tesla Electric already bundle home batteries with a Texas retail power plan, and Octopus runs programs that pay households monthly for giving the company dispatch rights over home batteries. The valuable piece is operating the energy relationship, not collecting rent on the box.8 9 10

The next phase is a land grab for controllable household load in Texas. As more providers bundle batteries, retail electricity, and software dispatch into one contract, the winners will be the companies that can sign up homes cheaply, keep them for many years, and turn thousands of small batteries into a power plant the grid will pay to use.5 6 8 10
