Notion monetizes automation with credits
Notion
This shifts Notion from selling access to selling work done. Seats cap out at the number of employees on a plan, but credits scale with every research job, support routing flow, or database sync an agent runs. Notion put Custom Agents onto credits on May 4, 2026 at $10 per 1,000 credits, then extended the same meter to Workers starting October 15, 2026, turning automation volume into a second revenue line layered on top of subscriptions.1 2 3 4
- The important product change is that Notion now monetizes outcomes, not just seats. Custom Agents can read internal docs, search connected apps, decide what to do next, create tasks, and post updates, with spend rising as workflows get more complex and run more often. Admin tools like per agent and workspace credit limits show this is already being managed like a real budget category.1 3 5
- Workers make the credit model broader than AI chat. They run background code for syncs, webhook handling, and agent tool calls, and Notion says they will start consuming the same credits on October 15, 2026. That means a team can pay Notion every time data is refreshed or an action is executed, even when no human opens the app.2 6 7
- This is the cleaner expansion path than the older all in one suite battle. Notion reached an estimated $865M ARR in July 2026, versus Airtable at $480M in June 2026, while repositioning around an agent layer across SaaS tools instead of a larger bundle of seat based apps. Credits give Notion a Zapier like or Clay like monetization lever inside its existing workspace footprint.4 8 9
The next step is a fuller merge of workspace software and automation infrastructure. As more teams run always on agents, external agents, and Workers against Slack, Salesforce, Zendesk, and internal databases, Notion can grow account spend through daily task volume, not just headcount, which is the fastest path to making the workspace itself the control plane for knowledge work.2 4 6 7
