Ramp's Free Cards Pressure Payhawk
Payhawk
Free turns Ramp into the default option for companies that mainly want employee cards, receipt capture, and basic controls, because the finance team can switch on spend software without starting a new software budget line. That forces Payhawk out of simple SMB card deals and into more complex finance orgs where the buyer cares less about seat price and more about keeping existing cards, syncing into SAP, and closing books with less manual work.
-
Ramp says its core card and expense management software is free, with unlimited users and cards included. That is hard for a paid vendor to undercut when the customer mostly wants a corporate charge card, policy controls, and automatic expense capture.
-
Payhawk’s clearest answer is not cheaper pricing, it is coexistence. U.S. companies can link existing American Express, Visa, and Mastercard corporate cards into Payhawk, so a finance team can keep incumbent bank programs and still get one layer for controls, receipt collection, and reconciliation.
-
That matters most in enterprise setups where ERP detail decides the winner. Payhawk’s native SAP S/4HANA integration exports reviewed expenses and payment data directly into SAP, attaches receipts and transaction detail to entries, and reduces manual posting work that lighter card led buyers may not value enough to pay for.
The market is likely to keep splitting in two. Free card led platforms will keep winning straightforward U.S. greenfield deals, while Payhawk will lean further into multinational finance teams with mixed card estates, stricter ERP requirements, and month end close pain that is expensive enough to justify paid software.
