Company Report
Chinese anode incumbents like BTR, Putailai, and Shanshan can bundle silicon-carbon products alongside existing graphite relationships at lower cost, using procurement incumbency and scale rather than superior chemistry.

The key battle is likely to be sold through battery supply chains, not won in the lab alone. BTR, Putailai, and Shanshan already sell the baseline graphite that cell makers buy every year, so they can add silicon-carbon SKUs into the same sourcing process, quality workflow, and purchasing contract. That makes the switching step feel smaller for a procurement team than adopting a new standalone supplier, even if the chemistry gains are similar.1 2 3 4 5

  • Putailai is a clear example of the bundling model. It sells graphite anodes and graphitization today, is pushing silicon-carbon into pilot and mass production, and highlights integrated, scaled manufacturing as a cost advantage. That means a battery customer can buy incumbent graphite and next generation anodes from one vendor.2 6 7
  • BTR and Shanshan show the same pattern. BTR presents itself as a global leader in graphite anodes and silicon-based anodes, while Shanshan lists artificial graphite, natural graphite, and silicon-based anodes in the same portfolio. These companies do not need better chemistry to pressure pricing, they need broad qualification and large existing share.3 4
  • Sila and OneD represent two different attempts to break that incumbent grip. Sila positions Titan Silicon as a full graphite replacement, while OneD grows silicon nanowires onto graphite, which keeps more of the old anode recipe intact. In practice, OneD asks the customer to modify graphite, while Sila asks them to replace it.5 8 9

Going forward, silicon anodes are likely to split into two lanes. In China and other price sensitive markets, bundled silicon-carbon from graphite incumbents can spread fastest. In the U.S., Sila has a clearer opening where domestic sourcing, China exposure, and automotive scale matter as much as raw material price.1 8 10
