Tipalti is trying to own the full path from asking to buy something, to approving it, to paying for it, to reconciling it in the ERP. Approve.com gave it the front end procurement workflow where employees submit purchase requests and managers approve budgets before a bill exists. Tipalti Card and Expenses extend that control to card swipes and reimbursements, so finance teams can manage supplier invoices, employee spend, and global payouts inside one system.

  • Approve.com pushed Tipalti earlier in the spend workflow. Instead of only processing invoices after they arrive, Tipalti can now capture the initial request, route approvals, check budgets, create purchase orders, onboard vendors, then hand the transaction into AP and payments. That matters because the strongest control point is before money is committed.
  • Tipalti Card is not just a corporate card SKU. It ties card activity into the same expense stack, with virtual and physical cards, receipt capture, preset GL coding, employee review, finance approval, and ERP sync. That gives Tipalti a way to cover spend that never shows up as a supplier invoice, like software subscriptions, travel, and employee purchases.
  • The broader pattern is category convergence. BILL expanded from AP into AR and spend and expense, while newer players like Zip focus on intake, approvals, vendors, purchase orders, and payments. Tipalti is differentiated by starting from cross border supplier payments, then layering procurement and card based spend around that payments core.

The market is moving toward finance suites that replace separate tools for procurement, AP, expenses, cards, and payments. If Tipalti keeps stitching these workflows tightly into its global payables engine, it can win larger mid market and enterprise accounts by becoming the system finance teams use not just to pay bills, but to control spend before and after every transaction.
