The bigger strategic point is that Waymo is moving from a robotaxi product into a broader transit vehicle platform. A roomier vehicle with sliding doors and a purpose built cabin lets Waymo serve trips where riders bring bags, strollers, wheelchairs, or multiple passengers, which matters because airport runs, agency dispatched rides, and daily commute contracts are longer, more predictable, and easier to bundle than a one off city trip.

Airport trips are already becoming real demand for Waymo. Waymo has permits at San Jose and San Francisco airports, began employee rides at Miami International Airport, and has offered public airport service at Phoenix Sky Harbor since 2022. A higher capacity vehicle makes those trips easier because riders often travel with luggage and groups, which strains a standard compact robotaxi cabin.

Paratransit is less like consumer ride hailing and more like software scheduled public transportation. Via shows the shape of this market, with modules for ADA paratransit, corporate shuttles, and city microtransit, and already dispatches Waymo vehicles in Chandler Flex. That makes Ojai useful not just as a nicer car, but as a vehicle that can slot into government and employer transportation programs.

Subscription commuting works when the fleet can handle repeated, high certainty routes such as office parks, airport connectors, and first mile to transit hubs. Waymo already runs a vertically integrated fleet and also distributes through Uber, Lyft, Moove, and now public transit integrations, so a larger cabin expands the set of repeat use cases it can sell without changing the core driving stack.
The next step is for Waymo to package autonomous rides as contracted transportation, not just app based rides. As the 6th generation Waymo Driver is adapted across Ojai, Hyundai vehicles, and future partner platforms, the company can chase higher utilization fleets in airports, transit agencies, and commuter corridors, where a vehicle that carries more people and more gear directly improves revenue per vehicle.
