Douyin captures search-driven commerce

Company Report
Kuaishou was a fast follower of Douyin in the short video/live streaming space, but the data shows that Douyin is still much further along in driving demand and turning their content into a successful advertising business.

Douyin’s lead comes from owning user intent, not just user attention. Short video gave both apps entertainment scale, but search turns Douyin into a place where users actively ask for restaurants, products, and how to do things, which is much easier to monetize with ads. The gap in search volume, about 20 billion monthly searches for Douyin versus roughly one sixth of that for Kuaishou, shows Douyin is operating more like a demand engine layered on top of a feed.1 2 3

  • Search traffic matters because it signals a user who is already trying to solve a problem or buy something. That lets Douyin sell ads closer to the moment of intent, while a pure scrolling session is better for brand advertising and gifts but weaker for performance marketing.1 3
  • The scale difference is bigger than users alone. The page data shows Douyin has about 2x Kuaishou’s users but about 6x its search traffic, which implies each Douyin user is doing more high intent activity inside the app rather than leaving for Baidu or ecommerce marketplaces.1
  • This is the same pattern visible elsewhere in China social commerce. Xiaohongshu has built meaningful search usage and a strong ad business, but users often still complete purchases on Tmall and Taobao, while Douyin has pushed further by pairing discovery, search, ads, and ecommerce inside one loop.3 4

The next step is for Chinese content apps to compete less on time spent and more on where commercial intent starts. Douyin is furthest along because it already captures the search, the recommendation feed, and much of the transaction path, which should keep shifting ad budgets and merchant activity toward its ecosystem.1 3 4
