PsiQuantum Building Millions of Qubits

Diving deeper into

PsiQuantum

Company Report
While most competitors focus on incrementally increasing qubit counts, PsiQuantum's strategy centers on building manufacturing capabilities for millions of qubits through established semiconductor processes.

PsiQuantum is betting that the winner in quantum will be the company that can mass produce the whole machine, not just show a bigger lab demo. Its approach turns the core problem from adding a few more qubits into building repeatable silicon photonics parts, like photon sources, detectors, and switches, on 300mm wafers with foundry processes that already make chips at industrial scale.1 2 3 4

  • This is a manufacturing first model, not a science fair model. PsiQuantum has said a useful machine needs around 1 million physical qubits, and its GlobalFoundries process has already run over a thousand 300mm wafers with tens of thousands of photon sources and detectors per wafer.1 3 4
  • The real head to head with Xanadu is less about raw qubit count today, and more about which photonic stack can be pushed into a high volume chip flow. Xanadu is also moving toward foundry scale, now with Tower Semiconductor, but its continuous variable approach uses a different qubit model and software stack.2 5 6
  • That changes the bottleneck. Superconducting and trapped ion teams often headline each new processor generation. PsiQuantum is trying to prove that qubits can be fabricated, interconnected, and eventually networked like communications hardware, which is why chip to chip links and telecom wavelength operation matter as much as headline qubit totals.1 2 4 7

If this works, quantum competition will start to look more like semiconductor scale up than isolated physics experiments. The advantage will go to teams that can lock in foundry capacity, improve yields, and package millions of photonic components into one error corrected system before rivals turn smaller prototypes into manufacturable platforms.1 2 5 7
